Reflection Essay
This honor’s biology project was indeed very challenging but at the same time I have learned so much. In class we talked about eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells, abiotic and biotic factors, osmosis, punnett squares, inheritance, DNA, and adaptations. All of these subjects were in the honors project and made it secure that I had a better understanding on the material. I learned a lot about the way animals bodies work, their adaptations, and innate behaviors. In addition to that, I have learned a great amount of information about hyenas to be specific. Spotted hyenas are scavengers and carnivores, they are the biggest species of the three hyenas’ species, and they live together in large groups known as clans. What was even more interesting to discover was that females are the ones to lead clans, and they happen to be bigger and more aggressive than males, so it was fun looking into that particular topic to find out more information about that.
The section of the project that was the most challenging to me had to be section 4: transport. I honestly think this part was the most challenging because I didn’t really understand it. I didn’t understand how osmosis worked, diffusion, active transport, and actually drawing the cell membrane. There were a few parts of information that was very hard to locate about my organism such as what they make within their bodies, equations for the process it uses to make food, and the cell membrane of a hyena’s cell. It took me so long to try and find that, therefore when I added it to my website I didn’t have much time to perfect everything. I will say I did get a few grades I was not happy with on my projects but overall I enjoyed the project.
Into enjoyment of the project, I’d actually rate it a 9.5. I enjoyed the technology part of the actual project… being able to add information and create a whole website. I also enjoyed being able to learn about a species, hyenas to be specific. It definitely gave me a lot more knowledge on species in the Animalia kingdom. The sections I enjoyed the most would be… Growth: Section 5 and Organism Interaction: Section 8. I really enjoyed section 5 that talked about growth, because I understand the DNA unit very well and it was pretty fun to figure out the new pieces of DNA and drawing the life cycle. Another part I liked was Organism Interaction. This part interests me because I liked learning about symbiotic relationships and innate behavior. It was interesting to research the information about that actual animal. I enjoyed learning about the body of the hyena and writing about it. In the future, I want to take anatomy, because the human body and bodies of animals and learning how they work interests me.
All in all, I can honestly say I’ve learned a great amount of information and feel closer to many species and not just the one I studied.
